Jewson’s brand new £4.4million purpose-built site on Sheffield Road in Chesterfield is all set to open following building control sign off by DBCP.
DBCP’s Senior Building Control Survey John Taylor, has overseen construction of the new building on Sheffield Road. Ahead of construction, John’s colleague and fellow DBCP building control surveyor Lee Carl, undertook the plan check for the new facility.
John said: “Construction has gone very smoothly. We’ve worked closely with the main contractor Morgan Sindall Construction before and during the construction of the new Jewson facility and they have been very professional throughout.”
Ahead of construction, a significant amount of engineering work was required to prepare the ground.
Located beside the road, the ground had to be built up and the slope stabilised. A king post retaining wall was put in place to enable the construction of a commercial unit and service yard. The lower-level design for the service yard has been designed to allow direct access from Sheffield Road. The king post wall also support the existing yard of neighbouring business Stagecoach. The ground engineering work was undertaken by Aarsleff Ground Engineering, one of Europe’s leading piling contractors.
Following completion of the new facility, Jewson will now relocate from their current premises on Spa Lane in Chesterfield, which has been the builders merchants home for more than 25 years. The relocation paves the way for the construction of a new southern link road which is being constructed as part of Chesterfield Borough Council’s Masterplan for Chesterfield Train Station.
Jewson is one of the largest builders’ merchants in the UK, with nearly 500 branches located across the country. The new branch will be a one-stop shop for tradespeople, and will feature a vast supply of building materials, a customer sales area and storage facility.
The new Jewson site is just one of the major regeneration projects across Chesterfield that are being overseen by DBCP, with other developments including Northern Gateway Enterprise Centre, Chesterfield Waterside – One Waterside Place, The Glass Yard, and many more.
