With a commitment to having the most extensively qualified team of building control surveyors, DBCP has entered into a training partnership with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).
CIOB is the world’s largest and most influential professional body for construction management and leadership, with more than 45,000 members worldwide.
The partnership now gives all DBCP staff, both building control surveyors and the technical support team, access to more than 200 items of CPD within the CIOB Academy online training portal.

“The training partnership is a key part in ensuring that all our staff have the relevant and most up-to-date qualifications, alongside their skills and experience, for their role so that we can continue to deliver the best building control service throughout Derbyshire and Staffordshire Moorlands.”
CIOB was part of the Trailblazer Group which created the now nationally recognised and approved Building Control Apprenticeship Standard. The Group also supported the development and launch of The Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Building Control Surveying in 2019.
Since 2019, all new trainee surveyors within DBCP have been required to undertake the Building Control Surveying degree apprenticeship. Three members of the team have achieved their degrees and a further three members of the team are undertaking the qualification.
Later this year, every building control inspector will be required to validate their knowledge and experience in a series of exams, ahead of a new register for all professionals in the building control sector being introduced in April 2024. The register is part of the Building Safety Act, which is in direct response to the Grenfell disaster and is aimed at making the built environment safer.
HSE, as the Building Safety Regulator (BSR), will establish and maintain a register of building inspectors, which will provide a framework for the class and level of building inspectors according to qualifications and experience, and handle the registration of building inspectors if they satisfy the competency requirements.

Having their skills, experience and qualifications validated will give further reassurance to the many builders, architects, property owners and emergency services crews that DBCP offers the best qualified building control service.”
He added: “It’s a very exciting time for people beginning their career in building control. The Grenfell Fire disaster highlighted the importance of building control in ensuring buildings are safe. This has put the job and role under the spotlight and is helping us attract young people to the sector.”
