Chesterfield Royal Hospital Emergency Department

DBCP oversaw building control for Chesterfield Royal Hospital’s new £27 million Emergency Department, which was officially opened in June 2023.

The new building is the hospital’s largest development in almost 40 years and can accommodate 115,000 patients per year.

John Taylor, DBCP’s Senior Building Control Surveyor who was delighted to issue the Building Control certificate for the completed building in April this year, praised its high standard of construction. He said: “I am very impressed at what has been achieved at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. It is a building everyone can be proud of.”

DBCP worked in conjunction with the main contractor, Integrated Healthcare Projects (IHP) which is a joint venture of Vinci Construction and Sir Robert McAlpine. Mechanical and electric services were installed by building services contactor NG Bailey.

The two-storey facility was built on an existing staff car park next to the previous Emergency Department (ED) building and has transformed the site into a state-of-the-art build. “It was a complex project for us to sign off on, with a number of technical details is to check,” added John.

With the new unit being able to accommodate more than 115,000 patients per year, building safety is paramount. There are a number of NHS ‘best practice’ guidelines concerning the design and planning of new healthcare buildings which required DBCP to have in-depth knowledge of in order to practically support the contractors.

As an LABC partner, DBCP has extensive experience of the most technically complex healthcare projects and developments, including the complicated legislation surrounding medical buildings, hospitals and GP surgeries.

Hospitals are complex 24/7 environments that must maintain temperature, pressurisation, humidity, lighting, life safety and security while meeting the comfort and safety needs of patients.

Work started on the new ED at the beginning of 2022 and was officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal on Wednesday 12 July 2023. At the opening she recognised the professionalism of the team who worked around the clock to deliver the state-of-the-art build.

The new building has an innovative approach to patient flow, high spec equipment and ultra-modern technology.

Dr Hal Spencer, Chief Executive of the Trust, said “The new department is already working incredibly hard and is managing patients in a really efficient and safe way – we know that we’re providing better care and a better all-round experience for people.

“The communities of Chesterfield will really see this as us redefining Chesterfield and showing that we’re fit for the future and providing a dedicated service which is second to none”.
